Process
The certification of biodegradable products (BDP) is a two step procedure: The extensive tests for the verification of the compostability of BDPs in accordance with recognized test methods (EN 13432 / EN 14995) may only be carried out and documented by approved test laboratories. All test results and relevant documentation have to be submitted to the certifying body by the applicant (manufacturer of the product). The BDP will be included in a positive list. If a product consists of a BDP that has already been certified, testing is not required: The product is certified by recognized experts on the basis of submitted documents that characterize the product precisely. This rules out the need for time-consuming tests on all products. Products that pass may bear the compostability logo (seedling). Checks are carried out to ensure that the product being sold conforms with that submitted for certification.
European Bioplastics promotes the use of product certification and the use of a single label in Europe. The association furthermore collaborates with leading organisations in Asia and USA within the International Compostable Product Certification Network. Agreements and memorandums of understanding have been signed with BPI (USA), JBPA (Japan) and BMG (China), e.g. on acceptance of testing laboratories and certificates. This approach aims at facilitating international trade of high quality products.
