Legislation and policies can foster innovations, as they create framework conditions for market introduction, which have a direct effect on planning, legal and investment security. Innovations, such as bioplastic materials and products, often experience either non-existent or even inhibitory framework conditions.
An example: in the case of compostable plastics inhibitions were caused because too little information and knowledge was available at the time the relevant legislation was adopted. Consequently, the particularities of biodegradable/compostable materials and products were not adequately taken into account.
Such a situation can and must be rectified so that the European Union can profit from the full potential bioplastics have to offer. European Bioplastics, its members and partners will continue to raise awareness for existing deficiencies and propose solutions to be incorporated into optimised legislation.
