Bioplastics – a part of the Bio-economy
The European bio-economy is growing dynamically. The focus of the bio-economy lies on sustainable production and conversion of biomass into a broad range of industrial products, materials, energy, as well as food and health products. Bioplastics are driving the evolution of the plastics industry in Europe and represent a crucial pillar of the bio-economy.
Europe`s future economic success and prosperity depend on an efficient growth of more sustainable high-tech industries. That is why the European umbrella strategy for innovation and growth „Europe 2020“, features the bio-economy as a main pillar of the flagship initiative “Innovation Union”. In the next few years, further specific supportive measures will be developed to accelerate implementation and advancement of the European bio-economy. Recently, the European Commission created important first instruments, such as the Knowledge-Based Bio-Economy (KBBE) programme.
European Bioplastics is preparing further input to the ongoing “Europe 2020” strategy development process. We support all efforts to strengthen research and development activities in Europe and welcome measures to facilitate the market introduction of bioplastics.
